Trick 'r Treat Review
By: Michael Lee
Starring: Dylan Baker, Anna Paquin, Leslie Bibb
Year: 2009
I have been waiting for "Trick 'r Treat" since the first time I saw the preview for it on the "300" DVD in 2007. It's been saved in my Netflix DVD queue for two years and I had to make sure I was to get it the day it was released. Normally I'm disappointed with movies I've been waiting forever and a day to see, but I'm proud to say that's not the case for this movie! Most horror fans already know the tragedy surrounding this movies release. Originally "Trick 'r Treat" was supposed to be released in theaters last year, but studio execs got stupider an held onto it for a Halloween 2009 straight-to-DVD release. Just look at some of the horror movies released in theaters in the past two years. "Prom Night", "One Missed Call", and "Whiteout" though I don't know if one would even call that a horror movie as it falls into my category of "sh*t". Any of those movies could've been replaced with this masterpiece. But no... Why f*ck up the chance of releasing a bad movie that would draw in the teenage crowd with an excellent movie? Somebody needs punching it the throat for this blunder.
"Trick 'r Treat" is divided up into four separate yet interconnecting stories, and I will review each separately.
The first story is about a school principal who doubles as a child serial killer when Halloween arrives. I could tell by the back of the DVD cover that I would love this part of the movie, an it didn't let me down. This was probably the funniest of all the stories and also sets up the three remaining stories. Also, the fact that two children are killed in this part earn it bonus points. Props goes to the Principal (who is played by the guy who supposed to be the Lizard in one of the future "Spider-man" movies) who was my favorite character (human-wise at least). I'd give it an 8/10.
The second story involves three sluts in their mid-twenties and a younger "virgin". The plot of this whole story is for that girl to lose her "virginity". The group of girls are supposedly going out to a party later that night and we are introduced to them changing into some pretty skanky costumes. The three older girls go to the party early while the virgin sticks behind to find a date, and winds up getting stalked by a vampire. I won't reveal much about this story as it probably has the most shocking ending that I didn't really see coming at all. Also, this is the part of the movie that features drunk and topless teenagers for those of you who are slasher film traditionalist. 7/10.
The third story is my actual favorite. It involves children setting out to pay their respects to the those who died in a school bus accident a few decades ago. But they're not perfect angels as the children's main goal is to set up a prank or two to scare a local neighborhood girl. But of course things never work out as they should and sh*t went downhill fast. Once again, major bonus points for killing off quite a few children. 9/10
The last story involves an old man being attacked by a horrorific little creature named Sam, who kills those who don't follow the rules of All Hallow's Eve. At the beginning of the movie, Sam kills "Iron Man's" Leslie Bibb who blew out a Jack 'o-lantern before midnight. Now he's out to slay a neighbor who stole some candy from some poor little trick 'r treaters. Sam is a horrific... Uh... The f*ck if I know what he is but I'm sure he'll live forever in horror movie infamy. The end of this story also connects the previous 3 stories together in it's closing scene. 8/10
So I think 8+7+9+8 divides by four comes out to a perfect 8/10. "Trick 'r Treat is my favorite actual horror movie to come out this year so-far (I would count "Zombieland" as a horror comedy), and it will definitely become a staple in my annual Halloween movie marathon.

8 out of 10 Super Scary Serial Killer's Hockey Mask.
