Tropic Thunder Review

By: Michael Lee

Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Jack Black, Tom Cruise
Year:
2008

Tropic Thunder Was By Far The Best Comedy I Have Seen All Summer (Though, I Have Yet To See 'The Pineapple Express'). It Contained Something Most Comedies Doesn't. A Real Plot. Now, Most Comedies Sets Up A Plot, Ditches It For Gags, And Then Follows Through On It In The Last 15 Mins Of The Movie. Tropic Thunder Uses The Plot As A Gag. And A Very Funny One At That. If By Some Slim Chance, You Have Yet To Figure Out What Tropic Thunder Is About, Let Me Fill You In: A Team Of Actors Are Filming A War Movie In Vietnam. When Filming Begins To Fall Apart, The Director Decides To Film The Movie Guerrilla Style In A Jungle. The Movie's Star, Tugg Speedman (Ben Stiller), Gets Kidnapped By Druglords In That Jungle And It Is Up To The Other Actors (Featuring Jack Black And Robert Downey Jr.) To Save Him. There Is A Surprise Ending In This Movie That Was Especially Great. But It's Not The Story That Makes This Movie For Me. It's The Cast. Now There Are Actors You'd Expect To Be In This Movie Like Ben Stiller, Bill Hader, And Jack Black. Then There Are Those You Don't, Like Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr, And Matthew McConaughey. Matter Of Fact, The Stars You Wouldn't Expect To Be In This Movie Are The Funniest. Robert Downey Jr. Is A Great Character, Even If That Character Doen't Know Who He Is. Tom Cruise Was My Favorite. I'm Not Going To Give Away His Character, Because He Is In Disguise And To Tell You Who He Is Would Ruin It. And Lastly, Matthew McConaughey Played Ben Stiller's Agent Who Just Wants The Poor Man To Have A Tivo In His Trailer. And Trust Me, He Gets It... Almost. There Are Tons Of Cameos At The Movie's End (Jennifer Love Hewitt, Lance Bass, Jon Voight To Name A Few). Make Sure You Get To Theater's Early To Check Out The Fake Trailers (One Involving A Gay Relationship Between Spider-man And Iron Man. Sort Of.) Tropic Thunder Is A Great Movie Filled With Tons Of Laughs, And One Of The Best Hollywood Satires I've Seen.
